Traineeships
Between 2004 and 2011, our traineeships included full upfront costs for offshore survival training courses, medical examinations, and extensive in-house consultant training to around three to five carefully selected candidates per year. Very few trainees succeeded in meeting/exceeding OSC’s consummate standards and, as of 2012, the traineeship scheme was modified to discourage insincere applicants that were not sufficiently motivated to become research scientists. Offshore survival training courses and medical costs are now reimbursed at the end of a traineeship only if the candidate succeeds in meeting our standards. All graduates who have successfully completed a traineeship have benefited enormously and have gone on to find employment. Trainees are not employees and are therefore entirely responsible for there own situation where HM Revenue & Customs or any other governmental organisations are concerned.
If you are fit medically, polite, respectful, honest, intelligent, ambitious, motivated, autonomous, independent, confident, communicative, sensible, professional, competitive, punctual, hard-working, flexible, able to react to instructions quickly and with alacrity, pay attention to detail, make immediate and sensible decisions based on the best information available, good at problem-solving, determined to provide first rate standards, cope well under pressure, possess the ability to multitask and prioritise, prepared to work unsociable hours, able to work our industry-standard and industry-wide twelve-hour shifts when offshore in exacting conditions, seven days a week, for up to two months (possibly more), and you put your career ahead of your social life, then we encourage you to apply for one of our traineeships. Positions are extremely competitive, with over 400 applicants from all over the world per trainee intake. Applicants for this position must have an undergraduate degree with minimum grade of 2:1 in one of the natural sciences (preferably marine biology, oceanography, acoustics, or engineering). Exceptions may be made for anyone possessing excellent technical ability, such as electronic engineering and/or programming skills. No prior offshore experience is required. There is typically one to three traineeship intakes per year, but applications are always welcome on an ad hoc basis, as we may consider offering traineeships to suitable candidates at unscheduled intervals.
All applications must include a CV not exceeding two pages (unless the candidate has considerable relevant experience and/or a publication list) and we encourage electronic submission (recruitment@osc.co.uk) with ‘OSC Traineeship’ in the subject heading, otherwise posted hardcopies are also accepted.
