|Underwater noise assessments & modelling

|T-POD & C-POD click detectors
These static autonomous click detectors are relatively low-cost systems, for which OSC have a proven track record for pioneering work with excellent results. Researchers typically deploy numerous PODs, and accept the often high probability of losing some units, but, to date, our own custom-designed deployment and mooring configurations have secured a 100% recovery rate. OSC supplies high performance pingers with an output that meets regulation (EC) 812/2004. |Modelling Consequences of Disturbance (iPCOD)
With increasing development and construction in the marine environment, there is a growing need to understand potential impacts on marine mammals both individually and cumulatively. OSC can assess this using the interim Population Consequences of Disturbance (iPCOD) modelling framework. This allows investigation of potential behavioural and physical impacts of sound from construction on five species of marine mammals (harbour porpoise, bottlenose dolphin, minke whale, grey seal and common seal).
|Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) Surveys and Data Analysis
OSC owns its own dedicated ROV which can be used to perform visual inspections of platforms, pipelines, etc. OSC also can provide ROV footage analysis to identify percentage cover of different substrates as well as identify species present. We also have a track record of repurposing industry-collected footage to answer scientific questions.
OSC have employed a wide range of oceanographical instruments, including sediment samplers, CTDs (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth probes), ADCPs (Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers) and turbidity meters to provide information specific to the marine environment at our location of interest. OSC’s MV Orca is a general purpose survey vessel and workboat adapted for various uses, including marine mammal and bird surveys, crew transfers, safety, diving, wildlife watching, and fishing. MV Orca is stored in OSC’s warehouse, situated in the coastal town of Dunbar. The vessel is available to mobilise anywhere in Europe at short notice. Learn more
