On 17th March 2006, we obtained amazing footage of a sperm whale from a contact in the oil and gas exploration industry. Since then, this footage has generated considerable interest from various scientific and media organisations.
The footage was taken at 900m from an ROV working in the Gulf of Mexico and shows a sperm whale slowly investigating a sub-sea pipe structure. Various markings are evident on the animal, including the tail flukes.
