Douglas Smith

Marine biologists, ecologists and the like play a vital role in protecting the natural world. As a Machine Learning Analyst at OSC, my job is to make sure these scientists and practitioners spend less time trying to identify marine fauna and flora from video or acoustic data, and more time understanding them.

Within our talented data science team, I specialise in harnessing deep learning for computer vision to automatically detect marine wildlife accurately and efficiently. I also contribute to the development of acoustic monitoring techniques. I am proud to work on technology-driven solutions to environmental problems.

Other noteworthy life achievements include, but are not limited to, being South African and therefore semi-exotic in Scotland, traversing (nay crushing) two degrees in linguistics without learning a second language, eating mostly vegetables, once surviving a visit from some orcas while surfing out at sea, and marrying way up.
