Gregory Zmirak

My passion for the ocean began at the age of 10 aboard my Uncle’s lobster boat in the vicinity of the Florida Keys. An initial affinity for shallow water diving had manifested into a need to live in close proximity to any and all interesting bodies of water by the time I reached adulthood. Some of my favorite locations include the rivers, alpine lakes, and streams of the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains, and the Caribbean Ocean of the US Virgin Islands. While working as a fly fishing guide in some of these stunning landscapes, I felt the need to get a scientific based education to further my understanding of the plethora of life surrounding me. As things fell into place I entered the MMO/PSO/PAM industry in May of 2022.

My previous enthusiasm for physics, computer science, oceanography, and biology fueled my interest, performance, and skill acquisition in the realm of marine bioacoustics and passive acoustic monitoring. Still to this day, there is nothing more exciting to me than a well resolved acoustic marine mammal detection. At over 800 days at sea, I look forward to continuing to expand my horizons while utilizing cutting edge technologies and methods to assist in the exploration and conservation of the sea, while supporting innovative offshore development projects
