I have always been interested in science and the natural world, enjoying nature walks, falling in the water and rock collecting from a young age. As I progressed through my school career, I was increasingly fascinated by the unseen molecular workings of the world, leading me to a BSc in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, followed by an MSc in Molecular Biology and Pathology of Viruses. I enjoyed my time working in the laboratory immensely, and am amazed at the progress which continues to be made in this field.

Raising my family followed on from this, and whilst at home, I continued to be involved with science in a more practical way, helping to deliver several Dunbar SciFest festivals, a Saturday Science Club and working on the Midlothian Science Festival team. During this time, I also set up a small business making quilts, embroideries, bags, books and other interesting crafty items for sale.

Looking to re-enter the workplace again, I retrained as a proofreader, and spent a year enjoyably poking around with words, grammar and punctuation.

All these varied skills have led me to my current place at OSC, where I am happy to be part of the marine environmental movement by association.

In my free time, I enjoy reading – mostly science fiction, fantasy and general science – textile arts and board games. Outside, I love walking with my dogs over our beaches, woods and hills, and getting out on or in the water for some sailing, swimming or snorkelling.
