First and foremost, we are a team of PhD-qualified marine biologists, oceanographers, marine engineers and underwater acousticians. As former research scientists in academia, we turned to industry to fund various aspects of our research. We were incorporated in 2004, under the name Appin Scientific and, in 2007 changed our name to reflect our main activities – ocean science. We undertake a range of services, specialising in underwater acoustics (the measurement and modelling of sound propagation) and bioacoustics (the noise of marine life), marine mammal observation (MMO), and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). A large proportion of the company profits are re-invested in the research and development and scientific research. While we operate under strict non-disclosure agreements, we aim to undertake as much peer-reviewed research as possible.
